A Statement FromThe Director
‘The Will To Burn’ is the story of ambitious young artists told in a way that only ambitious young artists can. The first time I read the script, it was like seeing a part of myself on the pages, and it is a joy to be a part of bringing to life a story I so deeply relate to. Beyond the craft, however, the concept that truly touched my heart was that of the conscious choice to pursue something that seems impossible, to reach for ambitions that feel untouchable, and to believe in them so strongly that it gives you the courage to take the road less travelled. That is the true definition of ‘artist’ to me, and that is why Carrigan, Saint, and Taylor are such heartwarming, heartbreaking, and brutally honest portrayals of the word. Their struggles to find their place in the world are my own, their fears of whether their paintings or photographs or monologues deserve to be seen and their wildest dreams of what they want to achieve are mirror images of my mind whenever I create a piece of work, and goodness knows I’ve lived through a hundred auditions just as terrible as Carrigan’s self-tape in the motel parking lot. Their bravery in pursuing their ambitions inspires me as I strive to tell their story alongside a community just as supportive as they are towards each other, and this is the most beautiful instance of the eternal circle of life imitating art, and art imitating life. These characters didn’t wait for an opportunity to find them, to stumble along until they tripped over a lucky break. They went out and created an opportunity for themselves, and in the same spirit, I create this story for you.
